Differences between Saunas and Steam Rooms

Are you torn between which one to get? Let the following information help you decide.

Which is hotter?
Even though the difference between sauna and steam room is fairly simple (one is dry and one is moist), your visit to a steam room may feel more intense than a visit to a sauna. The author of a comparison published in Physician and Sportsmedicine describes the difference.

“A steam bath feels hotter than a sauna because the steam helps prevent sweat from evaporating and because of humid air stores more heat than does dry air. In addition, when steam vapor hits the skin, it condenses, with the sweat already on the skin, to release what is known as the heat of condensation. A sauna, on the other hand, has a low humidity, so the body’s core temperature stays cooler, even though the temperature range is about 170° to 190°F.”  Source: LiveStrong

Which is better for people with breathing difficulties?
Steam showers are beneficial for people with breathing problems such as asthma and bronchitis. The humidity in steam rooms alleviates breathing problems. The heat will cause the body to sweat more, thereby cleaning the body of toxins through sweating. The benefit of the sauna is basically the same as the steam shower, except that the sauna temperature can go higher temperatures than than that of a steam room. Source: DoItYourself

Which is better for the skin?
Both facilities open up your pores and increase blood and lymphatic circulation, which will effectively aid in softening your skin. You will notice a healthy pink glow in your skin, which will make you look younger, so not only will you feel good but you will also look rejuvenated.

The steam also helps to clear out any impurities from the skin which is especially good for those who have acne. Similarly, saunas will help to eradicate blackheads to give you clearer skin.

That being said, do make sure that you don’t stay in there too long—spending too much time in a sauna can lead to excessive thirst and too much time in a steam room can cause dizziness or even a rapid heartbeat. Source: Care2
