4 Tips for Planning a Bathroom Renovation

Remodeling a bathroom is a rewarding yet challenging project. Here are 4 planning guide tips that will walk you through the remodeling process.

Determine your Budget
Budgeting for a remodeling project can be a real test of your self-control. Sure, you can create a spa retreat in your master bedroom, but does that mean your family will eat cereal for dinner for the next 15 years? And will your “big ideas” cancel out plans for other home remodeling projects? Remember, a stellar bathroom truly is a luxury island if set within a home in disrepair.
So, approach the bathroom budgeting process with a realistic attitude. The good news: There is almost nothing you can’t do on a budget because manufacturers offer a wide range of fixtures and finishes that can accomplish your goals.
Expect the unexpected. The one sure thing about any remodeling project is that you will spend more than you planned. The key is to keep that overage within reason. There’s a fine line between splurging and blowing your bank account—in fact, a single decision on a fixture or finish can cost you thousands more than you thought you’d spend.  Source: HGTV

Measure
Measure up the whole room to work out how much space you have to install any new fixtures and fittings. Remember you can never have enough storage – especially in a bathroom – so think about ways you can fit some more in. Don’t forget that all wet area rooms such as bathrooms must be waterproofed. Start Sourcing your Fixtures
There are countless choices to be made when renovating the bathroom, in terms of equipment and materials. Fixtures, flooring, countertops, faucets – all need to be considered carefully. Make quality your priority; after all, the bathroom is one of the most used rooms in the home, and your well-being is priceless.

  • Bathtub:Bathtubs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including recessed (or alcove), round, freestanding, clawfoot, deck-mounted (drop-in or platform) and extra-deep (soaking tub).
  • Shower:Corner, round, square, rectangular, with or without a roof – when it comes to showers, the options run the gamut.
  • Toilet:Toilets have come a long way. While older toilets use as much as 20 litres of water per flush, today’s models use just 6 litres.
  • Sinks:If several people use the bathroom in the morning, you might want to consider installing two separate sinks and mirrors, or a double sink and a large mirror.
  • Cabinets and drawers:Bathroom surfaces are in constant contact with moisture and splashes, which quickly mark them. It’s therefore wise to choose water-resistant materials that are easy to clean and maintain.

Start Talking to Contractors/Plumbers
You now have a pretty good idea of the scope of your project and this will make it easier for your contractor or plumber to price the job for you. Show them your plan and fixture ideas so that if there is anything problematic they can bring it to your attention now and you can address it before the renovation begins.
Once you’ve decided on your contractor/plumber and have a date set for the project to begin, start purchasing your fixtures and finishes. Most items, unless they are in stock, will take between 2 to 4 weeks to arrive. You don’t want anything to hold up your project once you begin and by having all the pieces readily available you will limit the amount of time your house is turned into a construction zone.
